Semaje Turnage

Author, Film Maker, Director, Music Producer, Trainer, Mentor

Semaje Turnage, Founder of ‘Turn of Ages’ Productions Company, defines today’s driven young entrepreneur who enjoys filmmaking and screenwriting. His recording helped to keep him out of trouble. Music producer, author and a director. A driven human being filled with God’s given talent but struggled with the many. He has recently written and directed ten episodes and two music videos for “The Nest” series. Born in a small town in Los Angeles – Watts, housing projects community, Semaje grew up amid gang culture and violence. From a single-parent household, his mom took on the bulk of the load along with his two siblings. His mom and other caring people mentored and nurtured him and kept him on the right path. A strong spiritual leaning that carries into all that he pursues and accomplishes. Watts was a virtual war zone. There was no choice but to go through so many obstacles. He found a way out of that lifestyle through his poetry, which eventually led him to become a rap artist. From the fishbowl into the great big ocean, soon his creativity bursting from within needed other outlets.
Semaje majored in theatre at L.A. Southwest College, combining his passion for acting and cinematography. Before he even knew it, he became a full-fledged filmmaker. Raw talent from the streets evolved and he put together his own entertainment projects. Over time, his vision is growing. Animation and storytelling were first love for him. As a kid, he used to watch cartoons and then found out that people actually drew these characters. He would draw pictures and put them at the back of the TV and see if they could come to life through the TV screen back there. He definitely had vision early on. He is a consummate storyteller. He lives and breathes the stories he creates, that must be told. “Even if there was no such thing as technology, I would be sitting around the campfire telling stories.” He also writes and composes music for his productions, flavored with Hip Hop, R&B and gospel. He has written and recorded numerous songs.
The highly successful premiere of “The Nest” pilot was held on January 15th, 2015 in Watts, CA. It was a meaningful, uplifting and beautiful Transformative Community event with the proud distinction of being the first red carpet in Watts, CA. The entire film community, local citizens and the actors in the show were in attendance for this glorious first. Filled with an abundance of emotional responses and positive feedback, compared favourably to ‘The Wire’, dealing with the streets and the judicial system. Semaje currently resides in Los Angeles. He has a Non-profit Organization dedicated to helping people in the community, discovering their talents and reaching to their full potential. He is a passionate motivational speaker looking to inspire through his experiences. He is an author of several books including “THE NEST” available on Amazon, Barn & Noble. Semaje Turnage is truly a gifted visionary, who boldly projects his creativity through his words onto the screen and through his keen writing.

Director Biography

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, from the Eastside of Watts. In my early childhood, I vaguely
remember experiencing the 1965 Watts riots. I became a sports enthusiast and an active athlete, I
thought I may be pursuing a career in professional sports. After graduating high school I enrolled in a
television production course at Southwest junior-college in Los Angeles. That opened my eyes to a
whole new world. I became infatuated with the film industry, I interned for several television shows in
the early 80s.
I formed a record label in the early 90s and had a distribution deal with the legendary music mobile Dick
Griffey. In 1999 I worked briefly with Kobe Bryant who at the time flirted with being a rapper, he formed
a record label. I was brought in to create opportunities for the record label and develop musical acts.
In 2000 I connected with Mark Brown the creator of the Barbershop film franchise. I began to develop
film projects and hone my writing skills. I ended up meeting actor Tom Sizemore, I was able to help him
though he had a sordid past. I assisted him by setting up pitch meetings I arranged management for him
and moved on from there.
I’ve been in countless pitch meetings far too many to name, whether in person or by phone, but here
are some. Charles King, Robbie Brenner, Rob Kenneally CAA, Mike Epps, E. Brian Dobbins, Gaye Hirsch,
Layne Eskridge.
Ultimately I had to spend my own money buying gear, building a computer to complete postproduction.
Spending my own money to shoot indie films, it’s a trial and error process, but each project gets better.
So here I am tried-and-true, tested maybe not beyond measure, but nevertheless tested. As the
expression goes, “the show must go on.
